This is a short story about the Danali of the Twin Gates world. It was originaly written as a dream of Jessie's but then I just changed it to a scene. The origional was written for my English 101 course as an exampl of Figures of Speech.
I now present to you "The Danali" written/last updated on October 21, 1998.
The Danali
It was a good day for scouting and that was exactly what Krys and his loyal companion Radon were doing. Radon, an over sized falcon, was flying low under the treetop canopy. Krys was on the ground jogging at a slow pace. Radon screeched and Krys stopped. Swooping down, Radon landed on Krys' arm.
"What is it, old pal?" he questioned the bird. Radon screeched again to say that there was trouble ahead. Krys looked in the direction that Radon had indicated. The meadow was in that direction. "To the meadow we go," Krys said while launching Radon back into the air. Radon flew up into the sky until he looked like a speck of sand in the air. Krys started jogging through the forest toward the meadow. With the swiftness of a wolf, he picked up his pace until he was at a full run. When he reached the meadow, he halted and hid in the brush. Krys looked up and saw Radon flying near the northern edge of the woods. The hunter must be there. With that bit of knowledge stored away he turned his attention toward the hunted.
Standing in the middle of the meadow was the target of this particular hunter. Krys looked at the rare creature commonly known as a Danali. The three foot deer-like creature was grazing on the tall grass. The two twisting horns upon its head twisted skyward like gnarled branches from the sides of its head. When it looked up between bites of grass, a white star was visible on its forehead, identifying it as female. Out of the corner of his eye, Krys saw something in the direction of the hunter. The hunter had shot an arrow and it was heading straight for the Danali. Within a blink of an eye Krys was next to the Danali with the arrow in his hand. The hunter stood up from his hiding place and stared at the young man. How could he have been fast enough to stop the arrow? Once out of shock the hunter turned to run. Before the older man could get very far Radon dove down on him like a missile. The guy ducked as Radon veered away. As the hunter stood up, he saw Krys standing before him. Krys grabbed oto the man's shirt and forced him the rest of the way up.
"Don't you ever try and harm any of my animals again," Krys said staring straight into his frightened eyes.
"I . . . I won't," the hunter stuttered. Krys pushed the guy away and watched as he ran as fast as he could away from the meadow. With that taken care of, Krys returned to the side of the Danali. She lifted her head and nodded her thanks then went back to grazing. Krys picked up the arrow from where he had dropped it and snapped it in half like it was a toothpick. Krys continued walking up to the creature until he was next to it. He laid his hand on its back and stroked it for a minute. Then he knelt down and examined the ground under it. Curled up under its mother's protective body was a small baby. Krys reached down and picked it up. It was the size of a small puppy and about just as cute. The mother stopped her grazing and watched him carefully. The baby lifted its head up and licked him on the cheek. Krys smiled and his eyes sparkled. The baby, unlike its mother, had a solid white streak that ran from his temple all the way down to his nose. His ears were too big for him and had a tendenc to flop over instead of standing up straight. Krys kissed the little guy on the top of the head and set him back down. Krys patted the mother on the shoulder. With the hunter long gone and the woods now safe, Krys' job was completed for the day.
